Fall has started, and so has the drop in temperatures in the PNW. With a climate adjustment, there could be changes in the condition of your varicose veins or spider veins. Read on to discover how cold weather could affect your veins and solutions for great vein health.

Effects of Cold Weather on Varicose Veins

First, holiday seasons and colder weather changes can potentially aide varicose veins. For one, colder temperatures can cause veins to diminish. This allows the valves inside the veins to work accordingly and reduce the pressure from the calves and ankles. As a result, one could experience reduced pain and colder weather can lessen cramps and swollen ankles.

On the downside, cold weather can also pose a threat on how to manage and handle varicose veins. Some factors to keep in mind include:

  • Weight Gain: For everyone, weight gain is common during holiday months, especially with holiday dinners and more indoor time. Unfortunately, weight gain can add more stress on blood flow back to the heart

  • Cold Weather and Overall Health: Cold weather also decelerates the circulatory system and other important bodily functions. As a result, this will weaken them and make them less efficient

  • Changes in Atmospheric Pressure: Especially when it starts to snow, atmospheric pressure also changes with cold temperatures. This can be problematic for veins as the circulatory system (which helps pump blood) will work less efficiently

Varicose Vein Management

While the winter can present some challenges, there are solutions to manage the symptoms of varicose veins:

  • Exercise is key: Remain active while spending time indoors—this will help the valves continue to pump blood through veins

  • Remember to stretch in the morning and before bedtime

  • Pamper your ankles and legs with massages

  • Consume high-fiber foods to help with circulation
